The Dubai Metro project was implemented in two phases. Its Red line connecting Rashidiya (the old part of Dubai) with Jebel Ali Airport was built in the first phase, passing through the city’s new business districts. The second phase consisted of building the Green line, designed to connect the Airport’s free trade zone with Health Care City. The network is due to carry 1.2 million passengers daily. The system will therefore relieve the burden on the city’s busy streets, with are highly congested with private cars. This project’s main issue lies in the difficult climatic conditions. In addition, the distance between the stations in its overhead sections meant that it was necessary for ACOME to deliver drums holding 5 km cable lengths.
ACOME supplied THALES RSS Canada with the loop cables used to detect the train’s passage and transmit data between the track and the train. These cables are installed directly between the overhead railway’s rails. ACOME developed a suitable cable for Thales RSS, and the cable’s prototype was approved by Mitsubishi, the project owner. Following approval, nearly 500 km of these cables were supplied between 2007 and 2008. As a result, the system’s Red and Green lines successfully entered service in autumn 2008. A version of this cable is already under development for other metropolitan railways worldwide….
