White paper G.654.E Fibre Cable

Telecom networks and FTTH
Friday 6 June 2025
ACOME and Sumitomo Electric have developed a new hybrid solution that allows network operators to deploy a single universal cable that supports both current and future network needs. Upgrading to 800G and above requires fewer repeaters to amplify the optical signals and can also avoid the need for signal regeneration.

Although optical fibre is often praised for its virtually unlimited bandwidth, real-world transmission constraints remain. For years, multiplexing multiple high-capacity channels has effectively met growing data needs. However, the rapid rise in global data traffic—driven in part by the emergence of AI—now requires ultra-high data rates (800 Gb/s and beyond) to be transmitted reliably over distances of several hundred kilometres or more.

This white paper examines how existing transmission technologies, such as Direct Detection and G.652.D fibre, are resulting in higher CAPEX and OPEX as operators strive to meet these escalating demands. By analysing concrete use cases, it highlights innovative solutions—particularly the adoption of G.654.E fibres—that can address these challenges and support the next generation of high-capacity networks.

The results reflect the synergy between Sumitomo Electric Industries’ innovation and excellence in fibre manufacturing, and ACOME’s expertise in designing fibre solutions tailored to future challenges.
